Inspired by the thriving graffiti community in his home city, Bristol, Banksy, the anonymous street artist, began spraying on trains and Bristol's city streets in 1993.

Banksy has gained his notoriety through a range of urban interventions. His aesthetic is clean and instantly comprehensible due to his unique ability to distill complex political and social statements into simple visual elements, and due to his meticulous level of details in his work.

"People say graffiti is ugly, irresponsible and childish...but that's only if it's done properly" —Banksy

His graffiti, paintings, and screenprints, Banksy uses whimsy and humor to satirically critique war, capitalism, hypocrisy and greed. His anti-establishment wit has had an undeniable impact on today’s contemporary street culture.

From modifying street signs and printing his own currency to illegally hanging his own works in institutions such as the Louvre and the Museum of Modern Art, most often using spray paint and stencils, he critically examines contemporary issues of consumerism, political authority, terrorism, and the status of art and its display.
