Luc Tuymans

Luc Tuymans (born 1958) is a Belgian artist and is one of the leading contemporary painters, credited for significant contribution towards the revival of the medium of painting during 1990s. Tuymans returned to this medium during mid-80s after a short brake spent in filmmaking. In these period the artist started using new techniques such as cropping, close-ups, framing and sequencing, which remain keys for the Tuymans's oeuvre.

“An artwork should point in more than one direction, not be this sort of placating, self-demonstrating, witnessing element. “

Luc Tuymans

Tuymans works with various media sources including magazine pictures, footage, Polaroid, online images to produce painterly inquiries into subjects of human history and memory. The source image is re-photographed and re-printed several times until the artist has re-appropriated it and would use it for his work. The resulting imagery of the painting would contain fading silhouettes, almost abstract figures placed against darker background. Tuymans represented Belgium at the 49th Venice Biennale in 2001. While working in Antwerp, the artist is widely exhibited and represented at the leading museums around the world.
