Let us tell you more about this edition

American Tan XXIV is an ironic celebration of the cultural phenomenon of American cheerleading. Hume deprives his cheerleaders of all individual features by focussing only on details of their moving bodies.

"This is my response to America and how we're all being tanned by American policy and culture, the war and simple, complicated stuff like that." —Gary Hume

By depicting only parts of their body in unusual perspectives, he creates an almost grotesque scenery which is actually emphasized by the level of abstraction he uses. Very carefully composed and structured, American Tan XXVI plays with simple, almost sketchy forms that reduce the acrobatic moves of the cheerleaders to quasi obscene, disturbing gestures of deformed body parts.
