Boy and Tree belongs to the set of twenty lithographs from "The Storyteller's Enchantments of Zhang Xiaogang", which comes as a limited edition of 130 rare books. This lithograph is based on Zhang Xiaogang´s series Amnesia and Memory, which he created in 2006. The series explores the underlying pressure of reality, depicted in the Chinese portraiture style. Incorporating both portrait and landscape in a Symbolist fashion that places the viewer in a dreamlike sequence.
"I don't want to plant a forest, but a single tree...I really have just one strand of thought and I dig deeper and deeper until I can't go any farther." —Zhang Xiaogang
A seated boy, holding a book, with the two trees; a Bonsai and a Cherry tree in bloom in the background, and his genitalia exposed. The sitter, while appearing muted and compliant, is given physical exaggerations: oversized head and tiny hands. These distortions imply stifled emotions and give a complex psychological dimension to Zhang Xiaogang´s work.
