Demand loves to ‘reproduce’ in his own personal way, the reality of everyday life. Without limiting himself just to photography, Demand physically reconstructs the environments that then become the subjects of his photographs, taking inspiration from all kinds of places; a kitchen, an office, a photocopy shop, reproduced with paper and cardboard models that are than portrayed in minute detail.
"I try to reconstruct an idea of reality we might all share – ‘illusion’ always implies there’s a trick or a trap, a moment where you say ‘oh, I was fooled’. I’m not after that at all, I’m trying to picture an idea of reality which is changing all the time."
Thomas Demand explores a notion of reality that guides our perception of a media and technology-dominated world: what, at first sight, seems to be a hyperrealistic reproduction of reality proves, at a closer look, to be a mode. The C-Print comes with a catalogue that combines Demand's images interspersed with texts about, the artist was published in conjunction with a major 2004 exhibition held at the Kunsthaus Bregenz.
