About the Artwork
Alex and Ada Katz got married in 1958 and are together for more than fifty years. Ada has been the artist's muse ever since and inspired over 250 portraits of Katz throughout his career. These works have attained an iconic status and are a unique exploration of a single figure over decades.
"My wife, Ada, is my muse. It just sort of turned out that way. She’s like Dora Maar [Picasso’s muse and lover]. She’s a perfect model"
This bright portrait of Ada mediates artist's fascination with his elegant muse - her friendly smile and gaze are direct and honest. The woodcut masterfully complements the texture of the hair and color composition. Alex Katz developed his technique of Abstract Expressionism, finding his own distinctive resolution between formalism and representation.
