About the Artwork
Alex Katz is known for his amazing portraits of sophisticated women. Unlike most past sitters this image represents a contemporary woman who is not a celebrity.
"I’m a colourist but I don’t think of it as colour, I think of it as light. You have to get the light right and colour’s the way to do it."
This striking and hypnotic black and white portrait of Anna, probably a family fiend, is built solely upon lights and contrasts. She has the powerness of a Greek sculpture revisited in Katz´s own peculiar style which alludes to cartoonistic simplicity of the of pop art. The sitter's gaze is direct, calm and friendly, which gives the viewer a feeling of serenity exalted thorough Katz's emblematic minimal execution.
