About the Artwork
One of the early work from Gursky, this photo represents the Düsseldorf inhabited countryside in the specific moment where an airplane crosses the sky.
Distance is also an important factor, which is something else I inherited from the Bechers. If a photojournalist was commissioned to document a scene, they would get much closer. But by always keeping a distance, I allow the viewer to come up with their own opinion.
In his photographs, Gursky gives his own view of nature, urban planning and social phenomena, capturing the extremes of the present moment.
