About the Artwork

Exaudi Domine belongs to Damien Hirst’s Psalm print series. The composition of these series derives from the famous larger gloss paintings with the butterfly kaleidoscopic collages. Hirst started using butterflies as a medium in his work as early as 1989. Describing the insect as a 'universal trigger'. The 'Psalms' form part of the ‘Kaleidoscope’ series, conceived by the artist in 2001 after he found a Victorian tea tray decorated with intricate patterns of butterfly wings.

"Everyone’s frightened of glass, everyone’s frightened of sharks, everyone loves butterflies."

Damien Hirst

Pastel hues of the butterflies' wings create a circular psychedelic pattern. The colour scheme mediates calmness and radiates light. Hirst's spiritual symbolism reflected in the butterfly wings speaks for the transcendental beauty and within the given colour scheme serves the composition's title that invites to listen.
