About the Artwork
Lüpertz sought a return to a more emotional, representative form of art. His unique blend of figuration and abstraction sought to simplify form while magnifying minutiae in his large-scale works, often featuring close-ups of heads and faces. The bodies, rendered in raw material, have a distorted and primordially expressions, which challenge and undo the idealistic vision of the figure as sublime form.
“You cannot understand the artist in his time, you can only love or hate him”
Felicitas is a modernist primitive figure, with its unnatural form from the point of view of the naturally proportioned, anatomically correct, traditional classic figure. Lüpertz carries the modernist figure of Felicitas to an extreme, making it seem altogether abnormal and returning to the expressive originality of the primitive body.
