About the Artwork

"Girl and Tree" belongs to the set of twenty lithographs from "The Storyteller's Enchantments of Zhang Xiaogang", which comes as a limited edition of 132 rare books. The lithographs from the set were inspired by the old family photos and represent Xiaogang's Family and Bloodlines series, where the artist explores the concept of family and collectivism in the Chinese society.

"She stays there, obstinate, faraway now despite the daintiness and the candy pink of the rare trinkets"

Fernando Arrabal

"Girl and Tree" represents a young girl, her face has a smooth pearly finish skin to porcelain, detached and impersonal yet moving and nostalgic. The patches of color in the image are used to further idealize the subject. The thin red lines running through the figure represent the complex, subtle and persistent ties, bloodline that connect the the past with the present. The "Girl and Tree" is also the artist's meditation on the society striving to live in a commodified and dehumanized world.
