About the Artwork
Katz is primarily known for his portraiture, however nature is the subject that the artist has been painting consistently since the early 1950s. This aquatint combines the artist^s two main themes representing a standing woman figure against a bright and unlimited background, which produces a lyrical dialog between the portraiture and landscape.
"I really wanted to do something new. Most painters do that. I feel I’m better than most painters or at least I want to try."
Katz’s profound interest in nature is reflected in the detailed study of light and the ability to capture the brief moment when the sun has not yet reached the horizon and the colours of the sand, sea and sky melt together in a surreal atmosphere in which the woman stands alone as the only human presence.
