About the Artwork

Donald Sultan’s signature large-scale paintings are characterized by a rich iconography that merges provocative objects, fruits and flowers set against an unsettling either black or white background. His production incorporates basic geometric and organic forms with a formal purity that is both subtle and monumental, reducing them to the utmost schematization. Although primarily classified as a still lifes, the artist maintains that his works are first and foremost abstract.

"Most of my ideas were to put imagery back into abstract painting. Some of the ones that look the most abstract are actually the most realistic."

This colour silkscreen with enamel inks and-tar-like texture on 4-ply museum board represents Sultan´s iconic ephemeral flowers – the perfect example of synthesis between the natural and abstract typical to his work.
