About the Artwork

While Katz is primarily known for his portraiture, nature is a subject the artist has painted consistently since the early 1950s. Katz explores the volumes and colors created by natural light, the views he finds are more instinctive than descriptive.

"Part of what I'm about is seeing how I can paint the same thing differently instead of different things the same way."

Alex Katz

Katz in this artwork represents the natural world as a meeting point of space and light. In these flowers, there is a timeless vitality known from his landscape compositions from the 1990s, where bright patches of colour define the different kinds of flowers and stand out from the flat background. Katz's flower shapes, a recurrent motif in his stylised images, are about to merge into abstraction.
