About the Artwork
Alex Katz is best known as the master of the cool pose. His close-cropped portraits of family and friends have at the same time the glamorous simplicity of billboard advertisements and the allure of movie stills.
"I guess there's a whole part of America I'm missing. I'm not trying to paint everyone, just people who fit what I'm trying to do."
The suite of six portraits, representing Christine, Elizabeth who is declined in three different poses, Javier, and Meghan, are rendered in powerful and contrasting black and white which maximizes the intrinsic contradictions of Katz^s works – intimacy and impersonality, quietism and desire.
