About the Artwork

Fascinated by the delicate beauty of butterflies, their short life span and their symbolic significance Damien Hirst created already in 2008 an edition with butterflies as a motive. In 2010 then origin the extensive edition "The Souls" with various butterfly shapes in 80 colorways as a foil block prints published by Paul Stolper and Other Criteria. The therefore issued catalog was bound with a signed print for a limited luxury edition of 100 copies from which is also the present work.

“This comes from an idea to fill the gallery with butterflies, an idea that I've had before. When I think of "The Souls" I think of Judgment Day and "Jacob’s ladder"

Damien Hirst

As the butterfly itself is a traditional symbol of the soul, this etching embodies the beauty and the impermanence of life, becoming symbols of faith and mortality.
