About the Artwork
"Spray" is a typical example of Bertoia's "tonal sculptures". Evolving from jewelry designs getting larger and larger, these arial sculptures redefine the space, by stretching the metal to the point that when crossed with wind they would create sounds. The space becomes flexible and variable in itself trough the movement of the metal.
"They are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them."
The artist performed concerts with "tonal sculptures", some of which were even recorded in a series of albums kwon as “Sonambient” music.
