About the Artwork

Hirst’s Purple Skull rebuffs the traditional image of the skull as symbol of death and decay, transforming it into a glorious Memento mori. Despite the ambiguity of the concept, this is Hirst's attempt to present the notion playfully.

"Immortality is really desirable, I guess. In terms of images, anyway."

Damien Hirst

As opposed to all the typical sinister “memento mori” vanitas images of skulls throughout art history, Hirst presents his vision via this glamorous screenprint with glaze and foilblock. The work is Hirst's emblematic meditation on human mortality, part of the Till Death Do Us Part skull series.
