James Turrell

James Turrell (American, born 1943) just like his art, is a man of broad horizons. He does not accept the artificial or the conventional. For almost 50 years the work of Turrell has repeatedly consisted of gathering light and transforming it into a distinct, encapsulating mystical experience. Working directly with light and space to create artworks that engage spectators with the limits and wonder of human perception. Turrell’s medium is pure light. He says, “My work has no object, no image, and no focus. With no object, no image, and no focus, what are you looking at? You are looking at yourself looking. What is important to me is to create an experience of wordless thought.” Often citing the Parable of Plato’s Cave to introduce the perspective that we are living in a reality of our own creation, as a result of our human sensory limitations and cultural norms.

“ Only eyes full of light can reflect it generously „
