Markus Lüpertz

Lüpertz’s work juxtaposes elements of abstraction and representation as it riffs on modern advertising and Germany’s history of war and destruction: The artist has directly invoked Nazi symbols, giving them new context. Lüpertz often paints in bold, raw strokes, while his sculptures can appear misshapen or even grotesque. He has exhibited in New York, Berlin, Cologne, London, Beijing, Paris, and Amsterdam. His work has sold for six figures at auction and belongs in the collections of the Albertina, the Kunstmuseum Bonn, the Museum Ludwig, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Tate, among others. Lüpertz was also an influential educator and led the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf for over 20 years.
