After capturing these facsimiles on camera, Demand destroys them, leaving only photographic evidence of their fleeting existence. Both facets of his conceptual approach allow him to explore collective memory and the nature of truth in our image-saturated era. Since the 1990s, Demand has enjoyed solo shows at Serpentine Galleries, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, among other institutions. In 2004, he represented Germany at the São Paulo Bienal. Since 2002, Demand has also made stop-motion films from his photographs. His work has sold for six figures at auction.
