Notable for his unique exploration of different materials within sculptural forms, including found objects and raw matter of various kinds. Cragg´s sculptures are very popular within site-specific public installation in various countries. Born in 1949 in Liverpool, Tony Cragg understands sculpture as a study of how material and its forms affect and form ideas and emotions. Studying the human figure is a prime example of something that looks ultimately organic eliciting emotional responses while being fundamentally an extremely complicated geometric composition of molecules, cells, organs, and processes. Cragg´s work does not imitate nature and what we look like, rather it concerns itself with why we look like we do and why we are as we are. A Royal Academician, Tony Cragg won the Turner Prize in 1988 and represented Britain at the 42nd Venice Biennale in the same year. In 2002 he was named a CBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for services to art.
