Maine Woods-Alex Katz-1

While Katz is primarily known for his portraiture, nature is the subject that the artist has been painting consistently since the early 1950s. The views of the Maine represent the area of Katz's summer residence, landscapes of Maine are among the most famous works done by the artist. The vocabulary of Katz’s landscapes is fairly simple. In Maine Woods the imagery is reduced to the black and white patches that form the contrasting shapes of wood, ground and the sky. The woodcut technique emphasizes the texture of the print contributing to the atmosphere of nature.

“ Oh, it’s art, it’s art, it’s not nature. I think nature’s just a vehicle for art. „
