Reflection-Alex Katz-1

While Katz is primarily known for his portraiture, nature is the subject that the artist has been painting consistently since the early 1950s. Through nature Katz explores its volumes and colors created by light. In "Reflection" Katz studies the qualities of the fleeting natural light. Typical to Katz, his representation is intuitive rather than discriptive. Katz's practice of minimalistic representation is evident in his execution of this print, and yet the visual expression masterfully mediates the feeling of the natural phenomena.

“ I’m a colourist but I don’t think of it as colour, I think of it as light. You have to get the light right and colour’s the way to do it. „
