Art Edition No. 1–275 ‘David Byrne’-Annie Leibovitz-1

Annie Leibovitz is most renowned for her legendary celebrity portraits, thanks to which she gained worldwide popularity and is now considered one of the most influential photographers of our time.

The photograph portrays David Byrne in his “Ivy Jacket with Wood Slacks”, designed for the movie “True Stories”, written and directed by him. The film offered an eccentric perspective on life in a small rural town in Texas, where the 150th anniversary of independence from Mexico is celebrated. Among the festive events was a fashion show held in a shopping mall. Byrne’s girlfriend at the time, and later his wife, Adelle Lutz, was responsible for designing the clothes showcased in the show. Her theme was “Urban Camouflage,” a playful homage to the historical connection between surrealism and fashion.

Years before it ever occurred to me that one could have a life as a photographer, I had become accustomed to looking at the world through a frame.
