Lantern Flowers White, Feb 16, 2012-Donald Sultan-1

Donald Sultan’s monumental still life paintings are filled with a rich iconography that merges provocative objects, like bulbous fruits and flowers, set against a stark black or white background. These works incorporate basic geometric and organic forms with a formal purity that is both subtle and imposing, reducing them to their most generic schematization. Indeed, although generally classified as a still lifes, the artist has always maintained that his works are primarily abstract. This colour silkscreen with enamel inks and-tar-like texture on 4-ply museum board represents ephemeral shapes of white flowers gracefully combined against a black background – the perfect manifestation of the synthesis between the natural and abstract typical of Sultan´s works.

“ My paintings are not really so much about walnuts (or lemons, etc.) as they are about working on the image, making it look like the thing so much that it's abstracted. „
